IT TOOK SEVERAL moments for Nara’s mind to register the sound of the door opening. Her eyes fluttered open, and when they came into view she saw her brother standing in the doorway. He stared at the two of them together, his expression a mélange of anger and torment.

Nara placed her hand under Rune’s chin and lifted her face upwards. She kissed the soft lips that had moments earlier brought her such pleasure, inwardly cursing Oyon for his ill timed arrival and the feelings of guilt it stirred inside her. Nara kept her back to the door so both her and Rune’s bare chests were covered.

“It seems I’m needed.” Nara sighed and twirled a cluster of Rune’s hair around her finger. “I’m so sorry to leave you now. The stew should be done and I can have an attendant serve it for you.”

Rune laughed and outlined the dip of Nara’s throat with her finger. “I think I can feed myself the stew at least, if I don’t get to finish the appetizer.”

Nara smiled at the roguish expression on Rune’s handsome face, but fumed at her aggravating sibling all them same. She wrapped the deels over both of them, before standing carefully so not to brush against Runes arm. She bent down to kiss Rune on the cheek before she walked to the door. Oyon stepped aside, and as she passed him, she spoke in a low hiss. “This better be good or so help me I’ll make you wish you’d chosen the life of a eunuch.”

He blinked at her threat and she stormed off toward the meeting room. If this were more whining about girls and what he could and could not do about it, there would be hell to pay.
